This office serves as the liaison between the Bismarck Diocese and the African Mission in the Diocese of Kisii, Kenya, East Africa. The director has overall responsibility for the administration of the mission program, including fundraising to support the mission work. The mission is fully funded by donations to the annual African Mission Appeal. The mission currently supports over 400 orphans and vulnerable children with food, educational needs and medical care.
The director speaks to various groups throughout the diocese and elsewhere, informing them of the mission's work in Kenya. He also recruits and interviews those interested in the mission and directs their discernment, their sending, and then serves as their contact while they are in mission and assists in the reentry upon their return from the mission.
A brief history
The Bismarck Diocese first sent missionaries to Africa in July 1990, when Fr. Bruce Krebs, Deacon Jim and Henrietta Nistler, and Cathy King traveled to Bura in southeastern Kenya with the support of then-Bishop of Bismarck John Kinney.
After violence in the Bura area escalated and raised concerns about the safety of the Bismarck missionaries, the diocesan mission relocated to Kisii in Western Kenya in May 1994. Since then, many priests, deacons, seminarians and lay missionaries have worked to spread the Gospel via the Bismarck Diocese African Mission in Kisii, Kenya.
